Summer Months Begin
May is upon us and so the summer months begin. This means more weather, both hot and wet, will be dictating our stage designs for the next few months. We also typically see a drop in shooter count for all the weekly matches due to the snowbirds flying home and less locals wanting to endure the heat and bugs. Rain may play a big role into the stage designs.
With less large USPSA and IDPA matches on the horizon and less shooters expected for the summer months we intend to curtail the stages back to some basics. This means more emphasis will be put on shooting instead of agility. The courses will remain challenging and competitive but your skills to make clean shots and deliberate decisions will needed. While the stages will generally be shorter and require less running this also means we may get done earlier and tear down will be much easier.
We have had a lot of shooters lately and that typically leads to more DQs and safety violations. Safety has been a big topic lately with the increase in safety violations. The RO's and match director's priority is safety. As with the theme of the summer many of those issues will be addressed with stage designs and a renewed sense of oversight of the matches.
Safety Briefing/Walk Thru
It is important that each and every shooter, both new and experienced, attend the shooters safety breifing before every mtach. At this breifing we address concerns with the stages. Concerns of safety, starting position and how to score are key to a good match. Too many times lately nobody has paid attention to simple things such as starting position and this leads to inconsistency with the running of the match. Many times people are off talking before the match and not only escape helping the setup but also miss the important safety briefing. We will be insistent that ALL shooters attend the safety briefing and those that do not attend the safety breifing may delay in the shooting for everyone else.
Be Careful on the Ice
As many have seen lately our bays can get slick. With the coming summer months they will get worse. This is due to more than one factor. First of all, the obvious is water. Our bays a based with crushed concrete. Mixing water on the top often leads to slick spots or muck on the top. Second, we are getting a lot of brass on the top of the surfaces. Brass is a bed of rollers and gets even slicker with water. We ask that everyone help us at cleaning up the slippery areas of the bays when at the matches. Safety is everybody's responsibility. We ask that if you see a concern on a stage that may cause a shooter to slip or fall, bring it to the attention of the stage designer or match director immediately. Don't wait until somebody gets hurt!
